Dale Watson/The Copperheads at Lee's Liquor Lounge 5/26/07

Folks who know me, know that if there's a good band playing at Lee's Liquor Lounge, that's where I'll be. A legendary bar here in Minneapolis, Lee's is the home of rockabilly and roots country in the Twin Cities: http://www.leesliquorlounge.com/ . Last night local band the Copperheads opened for one of my favorite performers, Dale Watson. Here are a few pics.

Shojo Manga Show at MCAD

This show is currently in the main gallery at MCAD -- and runs until June 29. Photos are from the reception, hosted by curator, Masami Toku.

This internationally touring exhibition includes more than 200 pieces from 23 artists who have contributed to the development of shojo manga (girl comics) in Japan since World War II, reflecting the evolution of social roles for Japanese girls and women in the past 60 years.

For the MCAD show, Western responses to shojo manga have been included -- student work as well as professional work from MCAD alumni.

My only regret about this exhibit, is that many of the pieces are not originals, but rather (very high quality) digital reproductions. Still, there ARE originals among the work, and it's a fascinating collection of images from this genre of Japanese comics.

Green Bay -- the rest of the pics

Here are the rest of my photos from the Rockin' 50's Fest. I regret that I have no pics of the bands that played in the casino lounge (The Neanderthals were especially photo-worthy!) or of anything on Sunday past 5:30 when my digital camera crapped out on me -- just before the Starlight Drifters reunion! So I have no pics of that great band doing the theme song from my comic book "Johnny Dynamite" -- darn it all! But here's a nice sampling of photos from Thursday through Sunday afternoon. If you're an attendee reading this who DOES have Starlight Drifters pics, how about emailing me a few, huh?

Green Bay: Wed. May 16

I just spent a week in Green Bay, Wisconsin, attending the Rockin' 50's Fest -- the world's largest rockabilly/roots music festival. I took quite a few pictures, and will be posting them over the next few days. My first day there was Tuesday the 15th -- I arrived early to catch the pre-festival show in the casino lounge, featuring Ray Collins' Hot Club, Levi Dexter and Lee Rocker. Unfortunately,no photography was allowed in the casino -- so I have no pics of any of the bands that played on that stage. I do have quick sketchbook drawings of some of the musicians -- and may be scanning and showing those later. There were four tracks of music running all the time -- so it was impossible to see everything -- and no photography was allowed during headliner Little Richard's show -- but here are a few of the acts I did see on Wednesday. More pics and comments in future posts.

Welcome to my world

Since I'm having issues updating my long-neglected website, I've decided to join the ranks of the bloggers. I'll be posting art from new projects, pics from events I've attended -- whatever strikes me as worth posting, I suppose.

For the uninitiated, please allow me to introduce myself. I'm Terry Beatty, cartoonist, illustrator, sculptor, teacher -- and most recently, grandfather to month-old Dawson Cole Evans.

My comics credits include a long, on-going run as inker on DC Comics' animated-style Batman books -- currently "The Batman Strikes," working with fellow Twin Cities-based cartoonist Christopher Jones. For a dozen years, mystery novelist Max Allan Collins ("Road to Perdition") and I produced "Ms. Tree," a comic book series about a tough female PI -- we also worked together on the comic books, "Johnny Dynamite" and "Mickey Spillane's Mike Danger." Max and I recently collaborated on "A Killing in Comics." It's a mystery novel set in the world of comics publishing, chock full of illos (and a cover) by me. It's out now -- check your local bookstore or amazon.com.

I've also been providing cover illustrations (and the rare comic strip) for "Scary Monsters" magazine for some ten years -- hence my nickname, and the title of this blog.

After moving to Minneapolis from my hometown of Muscatine, Iowa, I was "drafted" by fellow cartoonist Barb Schulz to join the crew of comics instructors at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). I'm a year into a two-year stint as "visiting artist" there, and enjoying working with a remarkably talented group of up and coming cartoonists. I'm sure when the school year starts back up in August, I'll be posting plenty about that.

For now, I'll sign off -- but I'll be posting again soon. I have tons of pictures from my recent week in Green Bay at the "Rockin' 50's Fest" (more about that later) to post -- I'm looking forward to sharing them with you.

Later!
